I remember when I was little, all I wanted was to have the love I saw through my parents and grandparents. Watching my dad bring my mother home flowers every week, cards just because and always kissing her on his way in and out the door. I always wanted the way my grandfather always teased my grandma and would tell everyone that she was “crazy about him”. The way he would put on Frank Sinatra in their living room as they would dance around as if no one in the world had their amount of love in their hearts. I would watch the way my dad cared for my mom when she was diagnosed with mild Celiac and adjusted his own eating habits to ensure my mother’s foods never got contaminated. I saw the way my grandmother took care of my grandpa as he for his last two years battled through aggressive Cancer. We all deserve a love that is passionate, that is undeniably beautiful and lasts a lifetime.
Whether you are currently in love, on your way into a new relationship or simply in denial about how you feel about someone, here are some signs that you are falling for someone special:
1. You can’t stop talking about them to anyone who will listen
We both know who I am talking about. You, you the person who will talk about your romantic interest to anyone who asks you about “how you are” or “how your day is going”. You, who finds ways to mention how they do little things every morning to make you smile or every night to remind you that they are thinking of you. You mention them to your coworkers anytime they see you smile down at your phone, you tell your friends “you will never believe what ____ did”. It’s ok we’ve all been in that stage; you’re excited and I’m happy for you!
2. You find any excuse to see them
Did you really find it easier to go the longer way home or did you just take it so that you could “swing by their apartment because it was convenient”? Seeing them 30 minutes before they have to leave on a trip just because the thought of not seeing them once more before they leave for 3 days sounds too long. You move around your schedule and your norms just to try and run into them as often as possible. Their schedule starts to look more like yours and vice versa. You make time for each other no matter how busy the flows of life gets. They take the long way home just to stay on the phone with you for 5 more minutes because the ‘End Call’ button always appears too early in the night.
3. Everything reminds you of them
That love song that you used to find really annoying is now sounding more perfect as you envision your person is what the song is about. Love movies are no longer cheesy, but realistic and give you date night ideas. Seeing their dog breed at the park reminds you of how special their pup is and makes you want to send a photo of them to show them you are “thinking of them” even when you’re not together.
4. Your personality becomes more like theirs
You are more emotionally aware of things you didn’t used to be because you learned more about what makes someone emotionally available. Your humor changes and what you find funny is now what they find hilarious and vice versa. You are kinder, gentler and more understanding of things you didn’t used to care about like their hobbies, political views and passions. Even your go to movie genre is changing, adopting their ways as a means of understanding them better.
5. You can’t remember what your life was like before you met them
How did you wake up before without the excitement of knowing they were going to kiss you good morning or text you some cheesy love quote every day? The mere concept of life without them sounds daunting and like nothing you ever want to experience. You are utterly and passionately in love with the idea of ensuring they are in your life forever.
6. You want to introduce them to your friends and family
You are breaking your own rules of waiting until you’ve hit a certain relationship milestone with someone in order to introduce them to the ones you care about the most, your friends and family. You want your friends to finally meet that person you can’t stop talking about and finally understand why you like him so much. You want your partner to see where you get your smile from, your mom and your witty sense of humor, your dad. You want your partner to attend family holidays so you can show off the traditions that are oh so important to you.
7. You smile every time you think of them
Stop smiling right now, you simp :)
8. They make your harder days, easier
Any time any small or large problem arises, you have to tell them because there is no one else in the world that would make you feel better about the situation except them. They understand you and know exactly what to say to provide you with the smallest bit of comfort and tough love to get through the difficult day. They are empathetic and understanding that you don’t always have perfect days and can be vulnerable and communicate your fears and feelings. They make your rainy days a little better by just being them.
If you happen to be falling in love with someone, tell them, show them, remind them how much you appreciate having someone as special as them in your life. Life is too short to keep your feelings inside forever. Who knows, they might even like you back.
